EMILY LACY "COUNTRY SINGER"CD (SELF-RELEASED)Country Singer is a brilliant record full of vibrant and dusty folk songs, following in the foot steps of the great country artists of our past. Eerily beautiful. Recorded by Ezra Buchla (of Gowns). Pro-made disc in shrink wrapped black a white CD jacket. Limited to 100 copies.

FOOT OX "OOO"LP WITH MP3 DOWNLOAD (STANKHOUSE)This is the third album by Foot Ox, and his first musical output since making the trek across the deserts of Arizona up to the green lands of Oregon. This record was made just prior to an extensive US tour that Foot Ox did with Splinter Cake in 2009, in which front man Teague Cullen turned his nylon string pop songs into a large full band orchestration's. This album follows a similar form, taking the band into a great deal of new territories. After a stripped down false opening track the album plunges into a mess of instrumentation that creates a incredible collection of deranged punk songs, that ease off the confusion at all the perfect moments to let Teague's knack for writing pop songs shine. Despite the much more present drums and the addition of many wind instruments, the classic Foot Ox staples are all still here and certainly with no shortage of tape collages and balloon squeals. This is without question some of their finest work. Record comes in a beatiful full color jacket, with a large insert with lyrics and info on one side and a two-color, screen printed poster on the other. |

FOOT OX "IT'S LIKE OUR LITTLE MACHINE"LP (DISTANT COLONY)This, my friends is by far my favorite record of 2008 thus far, and is a must have for sure. This is Teague Cullen's third full length, but the first to be released in LP form. He is accompanied by a variety of various musicians throughout the record, filling out his odd pop songs to the fullest extent. Catchier than ever, this record has you on your seat until the very end. It's circus freak, loner, pop songs that will give you goose bumps like no other. Greenish-grey marble vinyl with pro-printed covers and an insert. Limited to 500 copies. |

FRENCH QUARTER "IT'S NOT JUST KISSING"LP (GILGONGO & LIFE'S BLOOD)So, the French Quarter got "back together" and made a "follow-up" to the self-titled debut album released by Gilgongo Records in 2008. In the downtime between the 8 national tours French Quarter has embarked on since that time, (and after releasing a "solo" record Ugly Unknowns) Stephen Steinbrink wrote and recorded "It's Not Just Kissing", a collection of 15 new pop songs, culled from several tour-exclusive cd-r's and one VHS tape. "It's Not Just Kissing" finds Stephen with an even more adept control over the pop form, blending electronic elements and rhythms that dramatically expand on the quiet, nylon-stringed intimacy and melodic freedom that has coupled his most common live performance. Lyrically, this album is a reflection of Steinbrink's life on tour, his life at home, not wanting to die and not wanting to grow up in child-like earnestness. Emotionally sincere, ever-urgent and plaintively sad.
|
FRENCH QUARTER "LIVE AT THE SANDLOT"DVD-R (MOUNTAIN MAN)Recorded live in Long Beach, CA, this 30 minute DVD-R features a set of 9 songs from Arizona's French Quarter. The set was recorded back on Valentine's day 2010 and after sitting on the footage and high quality audio recordings for a few months, we got in touch with Stephen and then the DVD-R was born. These DVD-R's have a 2 layer hand screened illustration on the discs and come with digital audio of the songs featured on the DVD. These files can be accessed by inserting the DVD-R into your computer.

GOWNS "RED STATE"LP/CD (Kill Shaman / Cardboard Records)Gowns sketch out a vision of what the future of the rock band could be. Their over-the-counter psychedelia draws no lines between acoustic guitars and feedbacked pianos, processed spazzoid drum flails and a cappella harmonies. For the past two years, former Mae Shi vocalist/gunk programmer Ezra Buchla and Amps for Christ guitar-wailer Erika Anderson have brought to the American West Coast a fertile marriage of eerie folk murmur and crushed, twisted electronics. With percussionist Corey Fogel, the sound conjured by Gowns is a digitally ruptured, gospel valentine to the heartlands. Recorded at home, in bedrooms and basements from rural South Dakota to Los Angeles, Red State tells the story of life lived in the flyover zones. (This CD version contains the song "When It Burned", which does not appear on the UK or vinyl version of the album). |

JON BARBA "IF WE SAY IT IN UNISON..."CASSETTE (BRIDGETOWN)The most beloved and captivating songwriter/performer in the Los Angeles DIY underground returns for his fifth contribution to the Bridgetown catalog with his most developed and mature album yet. After suddenly relocating 400 miles away to Oakland, the artist formerly known as Nicole Kidman realigns the painful and emotional intimacy of his previous project under the dog-eat-dog lens of the East Bay. On Barba's debut under his own name, his signature style of frantic, emotional keyboard anthems shares the stage with rocking pop punk, bridged by softer instrumental piano pieces and the sensibilities of old school new age / ocean sound albums, courtesy of field recordings taken by longtime collaborator Kevin Greenspon on a tour together in 2009 and seamlessly sequenced into the context of this mini-album. |

KNIGHT RIDER "SIMILAR ORGY"3" CD-R (NARF)Getting bludgeoned in the skull never felt so good. Knight Rider charge full force with caveman electronics and mental-illness vocals. "Similar Orgy" latches onto an uneven groove and drives it deep into your brain. For those familiar with their brilliant flailing live shows, complete with their sociopath-on- muscle-relaxants antics this record gets the feeling just right. For those unfamiliar imagine a huge staggering man coming at you wielding a chair all while you're lost in some gnarly k-hole. Echoplex vocals, uneven beats, panicked guitar weirdness all while being subversively comic. I wouldn't listen to it in a dark room, if I were you. |

SNOWSTROMCASSETTE/CDR (MONOTONE)We are happy to finally have copies of Stowstorms debut album. This record was #2 in our top ten list for 2009, and is a completely flawless and excellent record. Kevin (aka Snowstorm), a New Jersey resident has crafted some of the catchiest and most memorable pop songs I know of that lay in a bed of lo-fi folk loner strums. 20 minutes of anthematic folk-pop recorded on a portastudio 488. This record is not to be missed. |

WHITMAN "UH OH, THE PO PO"CDR (BARF)We just came up on some copies of this classic Whitman single from 2005. This mock-rap song was recorded/produced by Erin Allen (of Child Pornography) and then was remixed four different times by: Captain Ahab, Tim Fite, Sloro (of Soul-Junk), and Uncle Wigglywings (aka Brother Mitya). So with purchase of this release you get not one, but five versions of this classic Whitman song. The CDR is stenciled and comes packaged in photocopied and stenciled covers with artwork by James Bradley. If you look closely you can see that the pot leaf on the cover actually says "whitman". That's some next level shit.

ANDREW JACKSON JIHAD / FLASPAR / GOLDEN BOOTS3-WAY SPLIT CD (NIGHTPASS)This 3 way split by some amazing bands from the Southwest is, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest things this label has ever been associated with. Hailing from Tucson, Las Vegas and Phoenix, all three groups produce next level pop music that is strange, beautiful and eminently listenable. Flaspar drops psychedelic dance pop that latches onto a deep groove and pummels you with extracurricular orbital effects direct from Ra himself. Andrew Jackson Jihad melds together feelings of pain, beauty and joy all with a wry, at times brutal, comic touch while affecting some bluegrass breakdowns. Golden Boots writes mind bending free-association pop songs with serious studio wizardry, horns and spirit. This is the first manufactured CD release from Nightpass, and hopefully it will set the standard we'll live by. All said, that's a high bar because I freaking love this CD. Its strengths are manifold; quality songwriting, musicianship, and yes, even a highly developed pop sensibility, which recalls everything from Neutral Milk Hotel to the Beatles to Talking Heads. |

KEVIN GREENSPON / CLOUD NOTHINGSCD-R (BRIDGETOWN)The long-awaited split album between these 2 rising solo artists opens with 5 new songs by Kevin Greenspon: California weirdo heartthrob pop punk about looking back on teenage years and losing it all. Densely packed with Kevin's unique guitar melodies and featuring Travis von Sydow/Ancient Crux on drums and includes a cover of No Paws. Cloud Nothings rounds out the disc with 5 more exclusive new songs: the Cleveland teenager takes his catchy brand of raw and distorted-beyond-the-red bedroom pop in a direction not seen in his "Turning On" album (still available below) or subsequent tape/vinyl releases. Limited edition of 250 pro CDRs packaged in shrinkwrapped jewelcase with full-color inserts and lyric sheet.
|
NICOLE KIDMAN + KEVIN GREENSPON "BLUE CRUSH"CD-R (BRIDGETOWN)An honest and collaborative songwriting endeavor between 2 outcasts of East LA. 11 catchy bedroom pop songs that tell a story of youth, school, hope and loss. Scratchy guitars and busted keyboards. TREASURE MAMMAL / FEEL FREE7" (KINGDOM MAMMALIA)Seems our favorite experimental artist/hip-hop megastar/motivational speaker Abe Gil aka Treasure Mammal has been busy as of late, putting out a split-7″ with fellow up and coming Arizona dwellers Feel Free, and let’s just say that upon placing the needle to the wax we were blown away by the leaps and bounds these bands have made with their uncompromising, indefinable sounds. Treasure Mammal channels R & B and soul with a liberal application of bizarre and phantasmagorical sound waves cascading over his diatribes on topics like “Bromance” and “Real Talk”. This is Gil at his most otherworldly, stretching his artistic bounds in new and exciting directions.
|
TREASURE MAMMAL / PANDA 847" (KINGDOM MAMMALIA)Treasure Mammal's vinyl debut, his side is packed with some classics, including "Pterodactyl Girlfriend". On the flip side is Houston's Panda 84, laying down some beats that will make your head spin. Limited pressing on swirly blue vinyl.
|
WHITMAN / JOHN THILL7" (NATRIX NATRIX)These songs will surprise you. A guy clanging on a guitar as if it's his first time playing becomes a chorus just long enough to swell and glow, making you reconsider everything you were thinking about music, courtesy of Whitman...John Thill produces a few songs that burst forth quick and excitedly make you feel prepared for love again, sitting on a curb, sipping on a sweet mexican soda pop. Previous releases with Shrimper, Nightpass Records. Inland Empire genius punk.
|
WHITMAN / TREASURE MAMMAL7" (TINY PANDA)Here is a split that will take you from one end of the emotional spectrum to the other within minutes. It has two new offering by each artist. Whitman gives you a psychedelic jam on how to make Riverside the ideal homeland utilizing fireflies as well as a cover of a song by I.E., stripping this club song down to ukulele and percussive noise. The Treasure Mammal side on the other hand brings a jazzy, electronic life lesson, and karma-tic Casio ballad. Black vinyl, with inserts containing lyrics, and covers designed and printed by Matt Hart. Limited to 337 copies.

V/A "THE CHRONICLES OF SHERIFF JOE ARPAIO"7" (Kingdom Mammalia)This is a legendary release called "The Chronicles of Sheriff Joe Arpaio" which is out on Kingdom Mammalia Records. It features 4 of Phoenix, Arizona's best bands (Andrew Jackson Jihad, Treasure Mammal, Father's Day, and Porches) and is on pink vinyl. This compilation is about Joe Arpaio who is the Sheriff of Maricopa County in Arizona: he is one of America's biggest racist/bigot/egomaniacs. This record has received quite a bit of press already and has been in the news again because a band named "The Crocodiles" from San Diego called a song "Kill Joe Arpaio." Well, sorry crocodile, Andrew Jackson Jihad said they were going to kill Joe first and it was on this awesome record!
The Artists on this compilation are: Andrew Jackson Jihad, Treasure Mammal, Father's Day, Porches.
